GLC Celebrates National Sweater Day

GLC celebrated National Sweater Day on February 13, 2012 with indoor temperatures turned down, hot chocolate for sale and donated sweaters piling up in the Library. Goldcorp Mine was our partner on this environmental and humanitarian project – spearheaded by Mrs. Karen Cormier, Ms. Wiwcharyk and with back-up by the GLC Eco-Team. We collected close to 150 sweaters that have been given to a few local agencies that can make use of them. We also sold $100.00 worth of hot chocolate (with marshmallows!) which will be directed to the Canadian Wildlife Federation – the inspiration behind “Let’s Go Outside’ – this year’s Eco-theme at GLC. It was fun and it was successful. Thanks to all who participated.

Grade 5 students leave for Festival du Voyageur

The Grade Five students anxiously arrived at school this morning to finally board the bus for their recently postponed field trip. As many parents are aware, snow-covered roads and questionable weather prevented the planned Tuesday departure. After some logistical rearranging, Ms. Vermette, Ms. Skedgel and Ms. Battiston were pleased to announce that the trip would go ahead, but with a Friday departure and Saturday return. Students were overjoyed and the evidence of that was clearly visible on their faces this morning as they arrived early for the scheduled 8:30 departure.
Students will take part in a variety of activities associated with Winnipeg’s annual Festival du Voyageur. In addition to learning about early Canadian exploration and fur-trading, the students will also stay overnight in the Manitoba Museum!

To learn more about the history of the Festival, see the wikipedia article. As well, to view pictures of this year’s Festival, see the official site.

Portfolio Night at GLC

Families gathered at GLC last night to attend portfolio night. Portfolio night is an opportunity for students and their family members to look at and celebrate authentic samples of student work. Portfolio night is also a time for students to reflect on their learning and to set goals that will take learning to new levels.
GLC was a beehive of activity with various fun events planned in classrooms throughout the school. In Grade 7, BINGO took parents and students on a classroom and blog tour. Grade 6 challenged parents to a game of “Are you smarter than a grade sixer?”. The Grade 3/4 class had a rice crispy square taste test and Kindergarten students had a chance to explore an IPAD. WOW!!!
A goal of the evening was to showcase our school website. Two booths were set up on the upper floor inviting familites to subscribe to the website. Parents were welcome to explore the website using a mini dell. A huge thank you to Grade 7 students for creating the fabulous displays and for guiding visitors at the booths.
Thank you to everyone for participating in portfolio night.

Upcoming: Wear your Sweater Day!

Golden Learning Centre and Goldcorp Mine will be participating in National Sweater Day on Monday, February 13th – All Day. The heat goes down, our sweaters and hoodies (with hoods up) go on and we realize another way to save ENERGY!!

In addition to wearing our sweaters, we will be accepting good used sweaters and hoodies to donate to local agencies that will pass them to men, women and children who could use them.

As an added bonus, we will be selling hot chocolate for $1.00 – BRING YOUR OWN MUG – during the morning and afternoon breaks. Funds raised will go to the Canadian Wildlife Federation, a member of the World Wildlife Federation – the ones who sponsor this day.

For more information regarding National Wear Your Sweater Day, please see their online site.
